Abraham Lincoln's hometown is also the second-largest city in the state of Kentucky. It sits in the heart of the Kentucky Bluegrass Region with a population of just over 300,000. The population is a fairly educated group, ranking tenth in the nation by percentage of residents with a bachelor's degree. Nicknamed the "Horse Capital of the World," Lexington has several race tracks, including the Kentucky Horse Park, The Red Mile race track, and the Keeneland race track. The temperature fluctuates between highs of 86 degrees in the summer and lows in the mid-20s, though the record temperatures have reached upwards of 100 degrees in the summer and lows of negative 20 degrees in the winter. The city experiences precipitation for more than 1/3 of the year, accounting for an annual average of 45 inches of rainfall.
The city saw its largest period of growth from 1960-1980, averaging more than 70% growth each decade during that time period. Part of Lexington's appeal is its very stable economy. The unemployment rate is only around 5%, and Forbes rated the city the 4th best for business and careers in 2011.
Though Lexington is not home to any major professional sports teams, it does offer a diverse entertainment scene. The Kentucky Wildcats are the most popular sports outlet by far. They offer 22 varsity sports for entertainment, including the winningest program in college basketball history. Aside from this, the city also offers more than 100 parks, including dog parks, disc and regular golf courses, and a public skate park. Kentucky's most historic bluegrass festival, the Festival of the Bluegrass, is held in Lexington during June. The city also witnesses several arts fairs each year, including the Mother's Day Mayfest Arts Fair and the Lexington Art League's Woodland Arts Fair.
