2006 Audi S4 Avant - High octane luxury
As the performance sibling of the popular A4, the S4 wagon represents Audi's contribution to the performance side of the premium midsize segment. Introduced as a late 2005 model, the S4 receives the benefits of the redesign, upgrades and enhancements that Audi made to the A4. Bold new sheetmetal gives the S4 a refined, sculptured look that makes the Audi look like it costs thousands more. Sporty, elegant, progressive, purposeful -- these are but a few words the German automaker uses to describe the all-new S4 wagon.
Sporty external design cues for the S4 include vibrant exterior colors with contrasting titanium-colored inner housings, distinctive S4 exterior mirror housings, S4 nomenclature on the trunk lid, aluminum roof rails on the S4 and dual exhaust pipes.
Power for the S4 wagon is provided by a strong 4.2L V8 prime mover. Torque is communicated to the pavement through the standard six-speed manual gearbox with synchronized reverse gear and a dual mass flywheel. A six-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic, Dynamic Shift Program (DSP) and hill detection capability is an available option. All S4 models come equipped with Audi's signature quattro all-wheel drive.
New for 2006 is the introduction of the latest generation Torsen drivetrain on all S4 models equipped with a manual transmission. The new system has an asymmetrical torque split of 40/60 front/rear under normal driving conditions. This helps the S4 exhibit a more dynamic driving sensation. However, like all quattro-equipped cars, engine power can still be sent to the wheels with the most traction. Tiptronic-equipped models retain a 50/50 torque split.
On the road, the S4 wagon is upscale, versatile, functional and fast! The Audi wagon provides an immediate, intense response, delivering a seamless stream of power all the way to the redline. This wagon drives more like a sports car -- with sports car handling and composure at high speeds.
Starting with a prodigiously stiff chassis, the control hardware includes a sport suspension that includes stiffer shocks and springs, strong stabilizer bars in the front and rear, and a ride height lowered by 30 mm compared to the A4 Sedan/Avant. The aluminum-intensive design yields low unsprung mass, which nets maximum ride comfort for driver and passengers, while still providing sports car like handling ability.
Inside the cabin, refinement and sophistication reign. Design cues for the S4 include gray instrument gauges with the S4 logo, brushed aluminum trim and a leather-wrapped, three-spoke steering with Tiptronic shift paddles on automatic transmission models. The driver enjoys a good outward view. Displays and controls are excellent.
Consumers may opt for the DVD-based Audi Navigation Plus with MMI-inpsired controls. This optional system even includes SD card slots so occupants may play their MP3s. In addition, a 10-speaker Bose premium sound package offers a choice of XM or Sirius satellite radio.
The adjustable center armrest and dashboard feature a number of cup holders. The glove compartment is a novel design -- large, compartmentalized with a cover that actually increases its usefulness when open.
Seating is comfortable and supportive throughout. Even rear seat passengers are treated to first class ventilation and there is room for two adults. A rear armrest includes a dual cup holder with a first aid kit inside. The S4 has plenty of nooks, crannies and storage bins to carry personal items. The 60/40 split fold down rear seat complements the square, well-finished cargo area.
