High value machine - 2002 Suzuki Vitara SUV
The last few years automakers have concentrated their efforts on fielding entries in the below $20,000 segment of the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) market. Suzuki has been a player in this arena for years, fielding an array of products that have quietly established the small Japanese automaker as a serious contender in the budget SUV market. The Vitara is aimed smack in the middle of this growing segment.
Built by CAMI Automotive, Inc., a joint venture between General Motors and Suzuki, the entry level priced Suzuki is available in both two- and four-door body styles and two- or four-wheel drive. For 2002, Suzuki has simplified the model offerings. Both two- and four-door body styles will be offered in just two trim levels -- the fully equipped JLS (two-wheel drive) and JLX (four-wheel drive).
A new fender mounted antenna and donut style headrests that offer superior comfort and visibility round out the major changes this model year.
All Vitara models are powered by a strong-running 2.0L DOHC 16-valve inline four-cylinder engine. Consumers may choose between the standard five-speed manual or $1,000 optional four-speed automatic gearbox with overdrive.
The heart of the Vitara is a sturdy, full ladder-type frame with boxed side rails and seven cross-members for added reinforcement. An anti-flex bar located in the engine compartment coupled with a steel cross-truck beam located underneath the instrument panel provide solid on-road ride while adding rigidity, helping reduce squeaks and rattles.
On the road, the four-door Vitara delivers good acceleration and is quiet at speed. A wide stance aids handling and control response. Suspension hardware includes MacPherson struts with coil springs and stabilizer bar in front, five-link suspension with solid axle and coil springs in the rear. P215/65R16 tires work with the suspension and rigid frame to keep the Vitara firmly connected to terra firma.
Inside the cabin is an attractive place with well chosen fabric textures and materials. Displays and controls are good with decent outward visibility. The rear seat will carry two adults comfortably. Grab handles at each door, including the driver's, facilitate entry and exit from the vehicle.
The rear seat folds flat in a three-step procedure: pull up on a strap to move the rear seat bottom forward, remove the head rest and place it in the holder in the seat bottom, and pull up on the latch on the back of the split-rear seat back to fold it flat with the cargo floor.
