Akron, Ohio was founded in 1825 and became the fastest growing city in the 1910s when the population grew by over 200%. This growth was due to Akron's booming industries like stoneware, sanitary sewer, fishing tackle, farming equipment, toys, and especially rubber. In the 1900s, Akron had numerous rubber companies in the area and was known as the Rubber Capital of the World, but rubber production has declined and the only rubber company left in the city is Goodyear Tire. In the face of this decline, Akron is now known for its large polymer research programs.
