Bringing the Sport Back to the Car: 2015 Scion FR-S Sports Car
Scion originally unveiled its all-new 2013 FR-S compact rear-wheel drive sports car at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show. The FR-S, which stands for Front-engine, Rear-wheel drive, Sport; is Scion’s definition of an authentic rear-wheel-drive sports car with exceptionally balanced performance and handling, compelling style, flexible utility and surprising MPG. The FR-S is a true “scion,” born into a lengthy history of Toyota performance cars and motorsports.
The 2015 Scion FR-S features better handling and stability thanks to a more rigid front suspension and re-tuning of the rear shock absorbers. The improved damping results in less body roll and a more communicative driving experience. The exhaust tips are now larger and more flush with the rear bumper. Inside the vehicle, drivers will notice the addition of auto on/off headlights and an updated interior panel with a carbon fiber look, as well as a new key design.
Also this model year, the first Scion FR-S limited edition release series is now available. Revealed earlier this year at the New York International Auto Show, the FR-S Release Series 1.0 is a modern homage to the sports coupe’s racing roots. Striking with a coat of Yuzu exterior paint color, the Release Series 1.0 comes equipped with enhanced features from Toyota Racing Development (TRD), including TRD Quad Tip Exhaust System and TRD lowering springs. Other highlights are the custom-designed aero kit with a rear spoiler and side fender garnish. Highlighting its exclusivity, each vehicle contains its sequential release series badge (1 of 1500) inlayed on its brushed aluminum shifter surround plate.
Additional FR-S Release Series 1.0 features include: TRD steering wheel; TRD shift knob; black seats with T-pattern; HID headlamps with LED daytime running lights; TRD logo cargo mat; and Smart Key with Push Button Start.
Power for the FR-S is generated by a naturally aspirated 2.0L four-cylinder engine. A result of a joint development between Toyota and Subaru, the partnership begins by combining Subaru’s horizontally opposed engine and Toyota’s cutting edge D-4S injection system that incorporates both direct and port injection. The flat-four is mated to with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.
The manual offers quick, precise shifts with a short-throw; while the automatic transmission features aggressive up shifts and sporty rev-matched down shifts that are initiated by steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Power is transferred to the pavement via a limited-slip differential.
The FR-S’s low curb weight is matched with a dynamically tuned suspension setup consisting of MacPherson struts up front and a double wishbone system in the rear. Lightweight 17-inch alloy wheels and ventilated disc brakes are on all four corners.
Inside the cabin features a 2+2 seating configuration that is designed with both form and function in mind. The front seats are mounted extremely low and are comfortable yet assertive, while the rear seat folds down flat, creating flexible space. The large center-mounted tachometer is the focus of the three-gauge cluster, keeping the driver informed of the engine’s vitals. Speed is monitored by both digital and analog gauges.
